Why protein is essential in our diets

Protein is one of the basic components of food and is a very important macronutrient for growth strength and repair.

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Protein provides collagen to the tissue of hair, skin and nails as well as connective tissue.

You should try and include protein in every meal regardless of whether you are trying to lose weight or not.

All of the enzymes, antibodies and many hormones in the body are proteins. They provide for transport of nutrients, waste and oxygen throughout the body.

Protein is the number one macronutrient with the greatest thermogenic affect.

The thermogenic affect of protein is between 20%-35% meaning this is the percentage of calories from protein that are burned by your body to digest the food.

Carbohydrates and fats thermogenic affect is only between 5%-15%.

Protein shakes can suppress hunger and appetite

It is proven that protein can decrease hunger and appetite.

Protein increases the levels of appetite suppressing hormones while at the same time reducing the levels of hunger hormone, Ghrelin.

One study shows that when participants increased their total calories from protein from 15% to 30% they consumed 440 calories less without trying to limit daily food portions.
