Most people by now will have heard about the keto diet. Although, You may or may not know what the keto diet is and how it works.

If you have no idea how it works, you might like to check out my full article on How the keto diet really works, and in this article I have put together 7 reasons to start the keto diet.

Let me explain as compact but accurately as possible what this diet is that so many people are raving about!, and the benedits of keto diet.

The keto diet is a high fat, moderate protein and low carb diet known for is fast fat burning!

You may be wondering how eating foods so high in fat can help you BURN fat. Well let me tell you the science behind this.

(to check out my partner Nikola’s 12kg weight loss in 7 weeks following the keto diet, you can find it near the bottom of this article!)

The keto diet is designed to put your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

Ketosis occurs when the body doesn’t have enough access to its primary fuel source which is glucose from carbs.

There are a few different versions of this diet but generally the ratio of daily calories is 70% from fat, 25% from protein and 5% from carbs.

Since the keto diet puts our bodies into a continuous state of ketosis, our bodies will use fat for energy instead of glucose from carbs.

Normally our bodies are relying on carbs for its main energy source but when carbs are restricted your body will breakdown fat creating molecules called ketones.

Ketones are not dangerous and the body actually performs extremely well on ketones.

The keto diet is basically forcing your body to rely on fat for its primary energy source resulting in burning more fat.

7 Reasons to start the keto diet

Ok so the main reason most of us go on a diet is to lose weight! And as I said, the keto diet is renowned for its extreme effectiveness in helping people lose weight.

But there can be so many other benefits to going on this diet, and studies have been done to back this up.

    1. Reduced appetite

Feeling hungry can be one of the hardest parts about dieting and the reason people often give up.

Low carb diets are known to help reduce your appetite. (1)

Studies show that this may be due to higher levels of peptide YY on a low-carb diet.

Peptide YY is a hormone in our bodies that reduces appetite.

The keto diet allows you to eat until you are full! If we done this on a higher carb, low fat diet, most of us are likely to gain weight.

When consuming foods high in carbs our brain doesn’t get the same signal that we are full, often resulting in over eating.

High fat diets like the keto diet works the opposite.

    So eat up!

    2. Faster initial weight loss than other diets

When on the keto diet the body flushes out the buildup of ketones in urine and lowering insulin levels.

This results in pretty rapid weight loss in the first days and weeks.

Studies show that people who are on a low carb diet lose 2-3 times more weight than people on higher carb diets.

One thing to know is that since your body is flushing out ketone buildup, you will also be losing sodium during this process so make sure you replace this to avoid muscle cramping and headaches.

Don’t be afraid to salt your food!

    3. More fat loss from abdominal area

This is one area A LOT of women struggle with when it comes to losing weight.

So this diet could be the answer to your problems here!

Our bodies have two main types of fat. Subcutaneous fat, which finds home just under your skin, and visceral fat, which accumulates in your abdominal area.

Visceral fat settles around your organs and too much of this fat is said to be linked to inflammation and insulin resistance.

This type of fat is considered dangerous and can put someone at serious health risks if too much of this fat accumulates. This is because of where it stores in the body (around internal organs).

Studies show that low carb diets such a the keto diet are very effective in helping to remove this type of fat.

    4. Increased levels of ‘good’ cholesterol

The keto diet is said to increase levels of good cholesterol (High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and possibly lower bad cholesterol (Low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

When your good cholesterol levels are higher it reduces the risk of heart disease.

Eating foods high in healthy fats increases the levels of good cholesterol (HDL).

So its no surprise that the keto diet can play a major role in increasing HDL levels!

    5. Reduced blood sugar and insulin levels

Loads of people world wide are affected by diabetes and insulin resistance. The keto diet can have a significant benefit here.

Studies show that lower carb intake lowers blood sugar and insulin levels.

The body uses insulin to help bring glucose from the blood into the cells for energy. People with diabetes are insulin resistant or it doesn’t work efficiently.

If you eat a high carb meal it can cause spikes in blood glucose.

This can be more apparently in someone with diabetes since their bodies cannot process carbohydrates properly.

Studieshave suggested that the keto diet may help people with diabetes.

Studies have also suggested that the keto diet may help people who don’t have diabetes avoid getting it in future.

    6. Significant drop in Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat or (lipid) found in the bloodstream.

One of the main reason triglyceride levels are elevated in sedentary people is. the consumption of carbs mainly simple carbs (fructose).

Highly elevated triglycerides may also cause liver disease and pancreatitis.

Studies show when people lower their carb consumption it lowers the level of triglycerides in the blood stream.

    7. May help with brain disorders

Studies suggest that the keto diet has neuroprotective benefits.

One study  suggests the keto diet could help treat or prevent conditions like sleep disorders, Parkinson’s disease and alzheimers.

Another study suggest that it can help cure children with epilepsy.

The keto diet was originally developed in the 1920s to help control seizures in some people with epilepsy.
