Why pay for a gym membership or have to head out on a cold winter evening after work to the gym?

These home gym essentials are everything you need to be able to effectively workout in the comfort of your own home!

And, you can do all of this very cost effectively!

It is so simple, and is just as  effective as going to a fully equipped gym with all the fancy new machines.

Exercise is extremely important for your mental and physical health, and there is no reason why you can’t effectively workout at home.

Often we lack confidence to get out and step into a gym because we have absolutely no idea where to start.

The equipment and machines easily put you off when you have no idea how they work. 

I love working out in the gym myself, but I also love having my own home gym essentials so I can workout easily any time of the day.

The cost for 1 month gym membership can be more than the total cost to purchase some home gym essentials! 

The following equipment is some of the most effective and easy to use home gym equipment.

There are so many exercises that can be done with each one, targeting both upper and lower body.

1. Yoga Mat

Investing in a yoga mat is a good start when setting up a home gym. 

If you want to avoid friction burns on your spine from abdominal exercises, protect your knees or just for overall extra comfort, a yoga mat is a very good idea.

2. Skipping rope

Skipping ropes are great for getting your heart rate up.

I get more benefit from using a skipping rope for two minutes than I do from running on a treadmill for 10 minutes.

It also helps with coordination.

As you get more comfortable with using it you can try different variations.

Skipping ropes work your entire body. Your upper arms, thighs and calves will be burning afterwards.

Make sure you keep your abdominal muscles engaged right throughout to really strengthen your core.

Skipping rope can shape your cardio endurance, stamina and speed, while improving the muscle tension of your whole body.

Kettlebell’s are one of my favorite pieces of equipment.

They are extremely versatile. 

Kettle bells can be used to work all major body parts.

Shoulders, triceps, biceps, back, chest, glutes and legs, you name it, kettle bell’s will work it!

The medicine ball is another favorite of mine.
 
What I notice when using a medicine ball is that my core muscles are engaged more than ever. This is possibly partially due to having no handles to hold onto.
 
Often when we have an easier grip on a weight or equipment  we tend to throw our weight around more, something you shouldn’t  do when working out.
 
Doing this can cause injury and you wont get the full benefits of the exercise.
 
When using a medicine ball you are forced to focus on your grip, especially when you are lifting slightly heavier.
 
If you are performing the exercises correctly your entire core will be engaged and controlled.
 
There are so many medicine ball exercises you can perform that target your entire body at once or specific body parts.

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are probably the most iconic piece of gym equipment.

They’re also a a home gym essential!

Dumbbells are easy to use and there are dozens of exercises that you can perform!

You can perform a full shoulder, bicep and tricep workout using only dumbbells, or you can use them to add extra weight while performing abdominal or leg exercises.

One huge benefit of dumbbells is that they can be purchased with different weights so you can easily add or remove weights to suit your exercise routine. 

I love having a few weight options to use because I use different weights for the various exercises I perform.

Going with a small set is a perfect start, you can find some really affordable sets on Amazon.

The swiss ball is a very versatile item and can be used to strengthen your entire body.

I definitely recommend purchasing a swiss ball if you are considering exercising from home. 

Swiss balls a highly effective for strengthening abdominals, pelvic muscles, glutes, legs and arms.
