5 health tips for beautiful skin

We look around us every day and see people with flawless skin, and we wonder what they’re doing that we’re not to have such a beautiful glowing complexion.

Of course we are all made up differently, and not one person is the same to the next.

This goes for everything! Hair, teeth, nails, weight, body shape and of course…skin.

Some of it does have to do with our genetics and our own personal skin type.

I could ask a friend with beautiful skin what products they use, but those products might not necessarily work for me too because I could have a completely different skin type.

But, hold on! There are some things you can do to improve your skin and that’s exactly what I am about to share with you!

Here are 5 health tips for beautiful skin that are proven to help improve your complexion and let that inner glow shine out!

1. Don’t sleep with makeup on

This is one of the worst thing you could do for your skin and one of the easiest things to avoid!

Makeup at any time of the day can react with your skin, depending on the type you are using and your own skin type.

But to wear make up to bed as well you are giving your skin no time to breath and restore.

Make sure you remove all make up with good quality make up remover wipes or cleansing water.

If you’re using water on your face be sure to use warm water, not too hot and not cold. 

Cold water doesn’t effectively remove the daily grime, hot water may irritate and dry out your skin.

You want to go to bed with a clean, fresh face so your pores can breathe. 

2. Exfoliate

You don’t need to exfoliate every single day, but every 2nd or third day it can be very beneficial to your skin health.

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, allowing your skin to have better tone and texture. 

It also minimizes impurities and reduces the chances of spots making an appearance!

Find a good exfoliator that isn’t too abrasive as you don’t want to harm your skin.

The best time to exfoliate is in the evening after you have removed your make up, right before going to bed.

This is when your skin will be in its most relaxed state, so exfoliating at night allows your skin to restore.

Some exfoliators can feel harsh and rough on skin, especially if you are a sensitive skin type.

3. Vitamic C

Vitamin C is found in the outer layer of skin (epidermis), as well as the inner layer (dermis).

Vitamin C is an antioxidant and plays a huge role in producing collagen which helps keep your skin healthy and looking youthful.

Taking Vitamin C can also enhance the effectiveness of sunscreen.

It helps to heal damaged skin and, in some cases, reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Adequate vitamin C intake can also help repair and prevent dry skin.

The recommendation is 1,000 mg per day of Vitamin C per day.

Some ways to ensure you get enough Vitamin C in your diet are:

  • eat for more citrus foods, such as oranges
  • eat other plant-based sources of vitamin C, such as strawberries, broccoli, and spinach
  • drink all natural orange juice

Make sure you don’t over do the citrus foods, as many people can have a reaction to this which can cause red rashes on the skin.

Too much sugar from citrus fruits also isn’t advised as this can cause weight gain and an overload of potassium.

    4. Coconut oil 

    Coconut oil is not just used in cooking! 

    This is a very versatile oil can be a great addition to your skin care regime. 

    But one important thing to note is to make sure it is organic virgin cold pressed coconut oil, not industrial coconut oil!

    Coconut oil protects the skin, forming a barrier to prevent further damage from day-to-day living.

    It has properties similar to the skin’s own natural defense, therefore it can help restore the skin’s natural protection allowing it to heal from the damage caused by pollution or cosmetics.

    It also helps to keep the body healthy, functioning, and free of disease.

    Oxidation can damage skin leaving it looking old; therefore, antioxidants, such as those in coconut oil, can help counter this process leaving you with healthy, younger-looking skin.

    If you have oily skin or are prone to acne this might not be the best option for you as it may worsen skin condition and clog pores.

    5. Eat whole foods over processed foods

    When it comes to skin care, eating a diet high in processed foods is an ultimate no no. 

    When I refer to processed food, I mean the packaged food with a whole lot of added sugar, salt, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, MSG, refind flour, trans fats, sucrose, corn syrup etc.

    The following foods are a perfect example of processed foods that will do your body and health no favors what so ever:

    • Packaged microwave dinners
    • Chocolate
    • Candy
    • Most breakfast cereals
    • Snack bars and packets (fruit rolls, nut bars, cereal bars, flavored corn thins and rice crackers etc)
    • Chips
    • Fries
    • Most bread (I recommend whole grain bread that has had the least amount of processing and additives possible)
    • biscuits, cookies, scones, donuts, cake
    • Fried food
    • Most plant based burger patties or any “vegan/vegetarian’ version of meat

    Consuming too many processed foods causes not only weight gain and feeling sluggish, but it also causes a build up of toxins in your body and can cause your skin to look dull and lifeless.

    Eating a diet rich in whole foods will help to rid your body of these built up toxins. 

    Although your body is able to get rid of toxins naturally, there are certain foods that can enhance the body’s detoxification system.

    Eating a diet consisting mainly of whole fruits and veggies as well as lean protein and foods high in healthy fats such as salmon, your body will react in great ways and you will notice a difference in how good your skin looks and feels.
