      What is ketosis?

      Ketosis is a metabolic process that occurs naturally in the body.

      Naturally, your body’s main fuel source is carbohydrates, so it burns glucose for energy, but when it doesn’t have enough glucose, it burns stored fats instead.

      This process produces ketones in the body, therefore puts you into a state of ketosis.

      When you’re on the keto diet,   you greatly decrease your consumption of carbs, eat a moderate amount of protein and a high amount of fat, preferably healthy fat. 

      This macronutrient split causes the formation of ketones and puts your body into ketosis.

      In other words by eating fat you are burning fat!

      Yes, that’s absolutely correct.

      Signs you are in ketosis

      Just before I get into how to get into ketosis fast, here are some signs that indicate you are in ketosis.

      1. Bad Breath
      Bad or fruity smelling breath is a common side effect of ketosis…unfortunately.

      This is due to elevated ketone levels, namely acetone, which is a ketone that exits the body through urine and breath.

      The only way to minimize this awkward side affect is to make sure you brush your teeth regularly, and/or carry gum and mints with you. 

      2. Suppressed appetite
      Another sign you’re body is in ketosis is appetite suppression.

      While on the keto diet it is common to notice a decrease in hunger. You will likely feel fuller for longer due to the higher fat intake.

      3. Weight Loss
      Its only natural that suppressed appetite would result in weight loss if you are eating less.

      1. Increase healthy fat intake

      Obviously given that the keto diet focuses on high fat intake, it’s important you increase how much healthy fat you consume.

      Now, I say healthy fat because there is a big difference between healthy fats such such as whole foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds etc, and saturated fats, such as butter and other high fat dairy products, animal fat etc.

      Although you can absolutely still lose weight consuming saturated fats on the keto diet, it is not recommended to consume too much.

      No matter what diet we are on, we want to always make sure we are putting good, wholesome foods into our bodies.

      A healthy diet full of whole foods is the key to long term health and wellness.

      2. Greatly decrease carbohydrate intake

      Again, given that the keto diet is high fat moderate protein and low carb, it is important that you minimize your carb intake if you want to get into ketosis quickly.

      You want your body to start burning fat for fuel as fats as possible, so by ridding your body of carbs quickly, you will be able to get your body into ketosis quicker and start burning that fat!

      In the first two weeks, restrict your carb intake to 20 grams or less per day to ensure you get into ketosis fast.

      After the first two weeks, you can start gradually adding a little more keto approved carbs, but be sure to not over do it so you remain in a constant state of ketosis.
